Strange Healey ?

This question showed up in one of my other "Healey" groups.

"I have the chance to buy a strange Healey. It is a 1967 3000 with disk brakes on all 4 wheels.
The really odd thing is that the transmission is at least 3 inches wider at the front end than on my 1967 3000.
The rear end also seems different.
The seller claims the car is original except for some body work he has done.
He thinks it was ordered from Healey for racing. Is this possible?"

I'll pass along any answers or information.

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim. Sounds like your buying a "nasty boy" that has been turned back into a stock Healey. I don't think any Healey left the factory with 4 wheel disc brakes installed. Look for MOWOG stampings on differential and the transmission. You might also check the engine mounts for originality.
How about some photos?

Hi John,

Thanks for the come-back.

I'll pass on the info. that you have provided and see if I can get some pix.

We'll see you at Round Up 25.

Rear dics brake where available from Donald Healey America.
Are there any marks on the dash that would look like a circular dash plaque was affixed there?

The 100S has 4 wheel disc brakes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I know that BJ8’s were available prepared as special order through the Competition Works, but I don’t know how late into production. The optional equipment sheet for my BJ7 states that there is an additional list of Healey Speed Equipment beyond that offered on my price list. This could have included rear disc brakes, but I do not have a copy of that list. A definitive answer could probably be obtained from Brian Healey.

Scott,

The original owner of my BJ7 raced the car in the Northeast in the mid 60s and equipped it with triple HD8s he said he bought through Healey. Does your sheet include that option? If so, I'd love to get a copy.

Thanks,
Rick

Rick,

My order sheet does not show the triple carbs as an original order part, but the Donald Healey America competition parts list for AH 3000 MK2 shows:
3 - 2" SU Carbs for $141.83 per set, part no. AUD18.
Manifold for 3 - 2" carbs for $215.35, part no. H8788
I have to believe that these were available from the factory but I would have dig further to prove that. As to the Rear disc brake kit, it was $235.25, part no. H8462. The 4 wheel disc brake kit for BN-1, BN-2, BN-4 and BN-6 was $396.00, part no. H8249.
