NEW YORK, March 22 - A legendary Formula One driver like Stirling Moss was not about to let a silly little setback like a fall down an elevator shaft keep him from buying one of his dream cars.
Despite being hospitalized in his native Britain with two broken ankles and an injured back, the 80-year-old Moss purchased an ultra-rare 1961 Porsche RS61 Spyder at auction for $1.7 million.
Only 14 RS61s were built. Moss bought it a few days after his March 8 accident, via proxy, at the Gooding & Co. auction in Amelia Island, Fla. The car had been expected to sell for $1.2 to $1.5 million.
Moss, who was knighted by Prince Charles in 2000, was quoted by the auction house saying: "I have long sought after a Porsche RS and had my eye on that Porsche RS 61 for several weeks and now cannot wait to see my new car!"
Moss has been a pop culture figure for decades in Britain where the cliché question police asked speeders was, "Who do you think you are?
Stirling Moss?" He made a cameo appearance in the James Bond movie Casino Royale, as a chauffeur, and today is the 50th anniversary of his victory in the last-ever Cuban Grand Prix.

Saw one article saying this RS61's ownership trail is clear and can be followed back to the first purchaser. Then it went on to say that with Stirling Moss' name added to the list of owners its value instantly has doubled.
