sticking throttle on BJ7

I'm having a little problem that I hope someone can help me with. Sometimes, after driving for a half an hour or so, when I take my foot off the gas the revs don't drop back down to the usual idle of 800 rpm or so. However if I just tap the pedal it drops right down. I lubricated the linkage, but that did not resolve the problem. I'm wondering if the piston is sticking. Time for a cleaning? Any help debugging this problem would be very appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

HI Steve, You might take a look at the throttle's pivot that is mounted on the side of the left hand foot well, also there are two bearings on the cross shaft that fail after years of use.Check the firewall bearing and the nylon one on the manifold for alignment or excessive wear.-FWIW---Keoke

I doubt if the piston is sticking, although it "could" be. To check, remove the damper caps & dampers. Lift the piston a bit with your finger tip & let it drop. It should drop fully closed with a slight clunk. If it does, there is probably no sticking problem.

A likely trouble spot is the fast idle cam sticking on it's pivot or the fast idle is misadjusted. (no take up clearance) The choke cable end stop should have about 1/16 free movement before it contacts the fast idle linkage. With the choke fully off, the fast idle cam should always be in its fully returned position & the fast idle adjusting screw should be fully clear of the cam. (visible air gap) A bit of carb cleaner sprayed on these parts, some mechanical working of the parts, & checking adjustment should help if this is the problem.

If the fast idle with choke fully pulled out is greater than around 1500 rpm, backing the fast idle adjustment screw adjustment out may even solve the problem.
