Sticking Starter Pinion

The starter is playing up again, the engine is tight from the rebuild and the starter pinion has taken to jamming tight against the end plate of the starter, affectively it is permanently engaged in the flywheel. This has happened twice now and I am now thinking of replacing the starter motor in it's entirety. I could buy a new starter pinion but the possibility of the course thread on the end of the armature being worn also, would mean I would be wasting my money in the end.

Has any one experienced this before and if so, what was the fix?

Did you clean the starter pinion assembly?? Both the shaft and the inside of the starter gear should be clean, and not greased or oiled as that will attract and hold dirt. Any lube should be one of those dry types. Also, as I recall there should be a spring as part of the pinion assembly, is it broken??

Buy a gear reduction starter and solve all your problems with starting and starters .

Agree completely with Healey Nut, it's been weeks and tens of starts since replacing mine with a gear reduction unit and still give a startle everytime I turn the key, the new starter spins it so fast--"now what" flashes in my mind.

Come on BOB you know to take to bits give it a good cleaning, then put a very light coat of COPPA SLIP on the shaft--Keoke-:encouragement:

Might be too tight clearance to flywheel and need to be shimmed.

Keoke, I did that the first time about 3 - 4 weeks ago, this time is was half a day before the Members meeting at Goodwood, I was starting her up to go and get some fuel ready for a 6.15 AM start on Saturday.

Any way, a few frantic phone calls and a few hours later and I had one of them new fangled gear reduction starter motors installed - note to self, if I ever move again I am going to get a house with a bigger garage.

Still have an occasional sticking problem but that is with the engine, not sure what is going on but I must get to the bottom of it, could be timing, could be fuel as it is a pig to start lately? or it could be the electrickery playing up.

Bob
