Steering Wheel

What would it take for me to put a 1974 steering wheel on my car, a 1977 mgb?

Even though I think the splines are the same on the early and later steering shafts, the problem you might have is with the horn and the turn signal return. The later models are not set up the same. Your best bet is to look at a conversion wheel for your car from Moss, Vic.Brit., ebay, etc. I know for sure that a 72 wheel and a 79 wheel are no where near alike as I have both. With the adaptor hub – it a pretty simple deal, with the hardest part being the removal of the original steering wheel. I recommend getting yourself a steering wheel or pulley puller. Mine came off pretty easy with the wheel puller – but sometimes they like to put up a fight, so be prepared to use some penetrating oil (not WD-40 it’s a waste of time) and let it soak over night before you try again.

But as mentioned above if you want to use the steering wheel center horn button rather than the wiper stock/lever it gets a little more complicated.

Good luck!

Bret, What year was the changeover from the center horn button to the wiper lever? Just curious. PJ

Or you could go for an LE wheel.....those are pretty sweet, but expensive

But where are you going to find an adapter to make the '74 fit? I don't know of any companies making them...it will not just slide right on!

The seller used it on his 78,he said the only thing that might no t work is the turn signals turning off by themselves.

well, if a '77 uses the same type of turn signal cancelling as a '76 (turn signal cancelling nubbie on the shaft not the steering hub), then turn signal cancelling ought to work fine.

Well, the steering column changed in '77 so you need to find out if he has a '74 column in his car...if he doesn't, count the number of splines on your column & the number in the wheel to see if it'll fit!

..Both my new wood steering wheels arrived today - one for Jerri's GT that has a '67 steering column & one for my '74-1/2 GT! Showed Jerri hers & as she took it in her hands, all she said was "WOW! Its light."

When's Jerri's future Show winning GT gonna be done?

Whenever....right now its full of boxes of new parts - stacked all over the new seats!

Keenan, what's the update on the engine in that car? Steering wheels don't do much good til you have something you can steer! How's things going since Ryan was up there?

I got the carb. parts,Ryans coming on the 4th to help me with the rest.

ALL RIGHT!!! I want to see a picture of you driving that car past the front of your house! You'll be ready for MG2006 with time to spare.

Hopefully Ready for valentines day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif and I have to be ready for Prom April 22, it doesnt matter what it cost or will take I need it by then, if i have to put a chev small block in it and pay a mechanic for the whole job i will. But it wont come to that Cause Ryan and I will start her up on February 4th:smile:

Well news its not the 4th its the 11th now.
Sent money off for steering wheel to. EH

I use a Momo wheel think it is 13" gives lots of leg knee room compared to stock only drawback is that it partially obstructs the view of the turn signal indicators Just hate it when I find out that I have been traveling for miles with the turn signal on

Well, I got the old steering wheel off today. That was fun, I dare say.

Your nose alright?
