Yes, I'm trying to get my steering hub off the spline. I've soaked it for a few days with liquid wrenck and WD-40. As yet, it hasn't budged, can't understand that, it's only been on there for 35 years. I am going to try heat, but just wanted to know if someone out there has a sure fire way of doing it. Take all of your hammers and put them some place where you can't get at them for a few days. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
 
WD-40 is kinda wimpy for this app. I'd say P.B. Blaster for a couple days first. Then put the hub nut back on flush with the column, find or fabricate a piece of hard 2x4 that'll fit inside the wheel hub and rest against the nut/column squarely. Set yourself inna seat, put both knees *behind* the wheel so's you can put rearward pressure on the wheel (not to the point of breaking it!)... Grab the wheel at the 12 O'clock position to equalise the knee pressure, thus giving rearward force in three points. Now whack the wood spacer with a deadblow hammer or the soft end of a (Thor) hammer for the wire wheel spinners. A second set of hands will help, but they usually come off about the third blow for me doing this single-handed. HTH!
 
I had to use all of the above plus a steering wheel puller, and even then had a heck of a time to do it. My friend who loaned me the Steering wheel puller stopped by after a few days of soaking and pounding and applied just a little more torque to it and popped it off...no problem he said!

I make a habit of using anti-sieze on the hub on reassembly. It makes the wheel removal much easier for the NEXT GUY. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
Carefull with the hammers part..on later Bs there is a safety type collapsable, shear pin, thingy in the steering column which will collapse with pounding.Better to stick with the really big, tough wheel pullers on this application I think.
 
Ugh, I have to do this once I get my hooters from Tony. I was hoping it was going to be a little easier...

Glad you got it off. What's worked for me in the past is a Harmonic Balancer Puller.
