Steering Wheel Restoration

Was looking at my steering wheel the other day, its not cracked and the chrome is in good shape, but its kinda grody. Don mentioned the other day about painting it. Has anyone done that? If so: what kind of pre finish, what kind of paint etc, etc?

Interested in any thoughts anyone might have.

Thanks, Tinkerman

Tink, my was similar to yours, just needed cleaning up because it was "kinda grody". I cleaned it all with a piece of that soapy steel wool to get all the grime off and then just painted it with Rust-O-Leum direct to plastic paint (no primer needed). Looks good, and so far the paint is sticking.

I used a common auto polish with a small buffing wheel and my wheel came out like new. I also used it on the ash tray for similar results.
