The splines looked the same, but are not.

The stock 78 Midget wheel is now mutilated, my wood wheel doesn't have the same splines.

Suggestions please???

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont fit..

I know they changed the spline size in 68-69' but I don't know if it changed again in 75' Is the wood wheels splines larger giving you a loose fit?

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont fit..

Splines and diameters of the shafts changed at least 4 times over the years. 5/8 shafts, 3/4 shafts, fine spline, course spline.

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

The female spline on my wheel is slightly smaller than the male spline on the shaft.

The old wheel will work, I could even clean it up to make it look somewhat presentable.

Or I could cut the center out & adapt it to fit my wood wheel.

I will stick it back on, at least there are now holes in it for using a gear puller when I want to remove it again.

Rick,

What is the bolt pattern of the wood wheel to the hub? I've made adapters to go between the pre-'75 stock hub and different after market wheels. Some look good and some not so good depending on the OD of the inner part of the steering wheel (the stock adapter is about 4" in dia so you see it if it is a small Grant 3 or 5 bolt wheel). Take a look at this. On a small 12" wheel for a friends track car I also machined the stock adapter down so that it wasn't so bulky.

I had a similar problem but maybe in reverse. I bought a Lacarra wheel for my Bugeye. The boss looked correct but the spines were different. I believe they were likely correct for later Spridgets. I bought a correct Moto Lita boss with the same bolt pattern and my problem was solved. If your new wheel has a nine bolt pattern, I may have a boss that would work for you.

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

I'll have to take some pics.
You guys are really very helpful, now I'll do a little legwork and get some pics up here ASAP. Thanks!

What else can I get to fit?
On a limited budget.

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

Lecarra steering wheels are a good buy at about $140, but they require a Motolita boss at about $95. I have a '78 steering wheel, but I guess you are wanting to move away from that look.

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

If you want to send me that wheel I'll make up and adapter for you. Did it come with anything to cover the center or a horn push? Is you factory horn on the turn stalk or the center of the wheel?

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

I like that wheel, it is very nice looking.

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

Thanks Guys!

Chris, what's involved? If you want you can email me - rbastedo at gmail com

I can remove the center and send just that, it's a much smaller piece form mailing.

It did not come with anything to cover the center and the horn is on the stalk on my car.

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

Chris,

I've got a trashed out steering column and wheel for a '68/'69 that I believe used the same spline profile / dimensions as a BE. I'd love to have a nice wheel for this car. I've seen some discussion on cutting out the center section and machining it down to be an adapter plate to fit other wheels. This is a one piece wheel and hub. Have you done anything like that before and if so what kind of $ are we talking about?

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

Rick - You have an email

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

Got it, thanks Chris!
Will respond soon.

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

I've done a few, it really depends on what the new wheel is and how you want to handle the horn. I moved the horn to the turn stalk on my car - some came stock that way. Since hubs are readily available from the usual suspects I do it when I find a wheel that I like cheap but that has a different bolt pattern than a Moto-Lita / Lecarra or Tourist Trophy etc. You can find a donor stock hub cheap. If you want me to modify it for you I can do that. I don't charge for it, I just ask that you support the forum.

By the way, the BE has a smaller spline than the later cars, I think it changed after the MKII Sprite / MKI Midget, but there are multiple splines out there.

Re: Steering wheel - got it removed but new wont f

Here is a question for you guys who know way more than I:

What years have interchangeable hubs?
MGB/MGC Midgets & Sprites? Can a hub from one car fit another?
In other words are there MGB wheels that can fit to a Midget & vice versa?

Rick

I remember Chriss being all over this one in the past.

Maybe when he gets back on.
