Steering Wheel Puller

How does one pull the steering wheel off? My manual is usually good, but not great on this issue. Also, I'm wondering what you all would recommend for a new wheel. thx
 
Remove the nut and have someone pull on the wheel. While they are holding pressure, use a punch in the indentation on the shaft, where a puller would be seated, and hammer it a few times. Be careful to keep the punch in the center of the shaft or you could damage the threads.

my recommendation would be to leave the nut on the last couple of threads for safety, as it will release very quickly.
Personally I use a soft heavy hammer from underneath.

the steering wheel itself from below, to shock it of the taper. Just leave the nut on to stop the wheel flying off.

I personally like the original wheel. If you want a different 'feel' that's one thing but if yours is just a bit cracked and old looking they are pretty easy to restore.

If you are pulling it as part of an interior resto you may find it is easier to pull the wheel and column as one piece.
 
That ebay link is for an item being sold by bluechips2001, his name is Joe. He's a good guy, I've ordered lots of stuff from him, including a new hub for the moto-lita wheel I got for my TR6. I bought a vintage wheel from a guy in England and restored it (it was on his 70 TR6 since it was a year old), but he didn't have the hub. Since moto-lita hasn't changed their wheel designs in over 30 years the current hub fit the wheel perfectly, and Joe gave me a great price for it. The only thing I had to get directly from Moto-Lita were the screws, as they are not part of the hub kit, and they were a pleasure to deal with.

I absolutely love the look of a classic wood rim wheel, every vintage sports car should have one IMO, although I'm sure there are those that don't care for them.
