when i turn my steering wheel from side to side there is a quater to half an inch of free movement before engaging the wheels...how do i tighten this play???? this is on my 58 BN4

Check your shop manual. There is a setscrew adjustment on the top for sector to worm adjustment. There is also an adjustment for worm end play. This is done by changing shims on the steering box end cap. If nothing is seriously worn, you can get the play at the rim down to about 1/8" or less.
