steering wheel diameter

does anyone have experience with fitting a 14 or 15 inch wheel in place of the original 16 inch wheel on a bj8. i am trying to gain wiggle room in the cockpit but don't want to sacrifice steering ease

I replaced mine with a Lempert 15 inch wheel (He is a member of this forum). It is a great steering wheel and I would recommend it. Frankly, it is easier than the original. I would see no problem w/ a 14 inch wheel either, if you need additional space.

Hi Steve /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

I replaced mine with a 14 inch Tourist Trophy wheel from one of the usual suspects, click here and check item D. It greatly increased the "wiggle room" and did not sacrifice steering ease in my opinion. Let me know if you want a pic, I can post one at noon when I'm home for lunch if that would help with your review of the options, good luck! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

If you wish to be completely correct, original wheels have three spokes spaced at 120 degrees. One spoke at the top. This arrangement gives best gage visibility.

The Moss wheels do not have the spokes spaced at 120 degrees.

I agree that a smaller diameter may be an improvement.

Edit:
If you don't care what was original, use anything that you like. Dare to be different. There are more than enough original cars now. Since the rear seat pans reportedly came from a tractor, anything should be ok.

Hi steve, there is a standard Healey type wheel of 15" diameter around. However, they are as scarce as hens teeth. You might scare one up at a large swap meet.--Fwiw--Keoke

My Lempert wheel has the spokes at 120 degrees as Dave suggests. The Moss wheels have spokes that hide the gauges when the wheel is in the straight ahead position. The 120 degree spokes allow you to see the speedo and tach in the straight ahead position.

Yes the Lempert wheels have the 120 Deg spoke spacing Shorn. However, I don't see why you do not have full view of the gauges using the wheel Velox purchased when the straight ahead position causes the off spoke to point straight down as shown in his "item D reference". Seems that would work ok to me,--Keoke ?

Yes, as Keoke noted, with the wheel I have the off spoke is mounted straight down and there is a completely unobstructed view of the gauges in straight ahead driving... going with an after market (non-original) wheel obviated any concern I had with spoke degrees or correct positioning, for that I'd put the original wheel back on /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif I had tried a 1958 Edsel wheel with the center push buttons but could not make them work with the trafficator /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif oh well anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
