Steering wheel blues

So I bought a steering wheel that looked EXACTLY like the cracked one i have in my 66 Sprite but when I went to put it on , the hole through the wheel was just a bit smaller than mine. So now I have a wall ornament instead of a new steering wheel.
What's up with that? Why would they change the steering gear when they left lever arm shocks on the car forever???
Anyone have an idea of what year this would fit, as I said it looks exactly like mine. (two metal rods on bottom and both sides, same horn cap etc etc)

Do not know the answer to your questions, but I do know they changed the internal size of the spline a number of times during the run of Sprite-Midget years. More times than one would think was necessary. Didn't they think we would ever want to replace the steering wheels on these cars? The original one on my BE is the most plain-jane steering wheel I have ever seen!

PS Take a look in the Moss catalog and check the fitment years, maybe for your answer.

I do know that the 65 and 67 steering wheel are different but do not know where the 66 falls, look in the Moss catalog that is where I got my 65 from.

Late 64 thru most of 67, I believe, used the larger hole wheel. 68 they went to the small hole and a solid steering shaft. I'm guessing it happened when they were forced to go to padded dash and colapsable steering column. The horn was relocated to the turn signal stalk. Without checking on that anyway. Anyone else??

Kurt.

If it doesn't fit, I believe radibob can suggest how to mount it on the wall.....lol

I've got a couple MGB steering wheel hubs you could mount with it (took me three tries to get the right one for my B).

I don't know what god answered my prayer, but after reading your post, I decided I might as well try to install the darn thing, and low and behold, it fit beautifully. As I stated before, I have a '66 as well and got my "looks exactly the same" steering wheel from a Moss sub-retailer lbcarco.com. I don't know if they supply different parts but mine fit. It was item number 453-865. I think they even use the same part numbers as Moss. Good luck.
