Steering Wheel Adapter

Sometime last year there was a thread about after market steering wheels and hub adapters. Mark (Silent Unicorn) and Matthew Herd (anyone know where he is) as well as others were interested. It seemed that there were a lot of cool steering wheels out there but the price and availability of the adapters made it tough to do.
Well I decided to see if I could design an adapter to use the stock hub. I did some digging and got the bolt patterns for the 5 bolt Grant, 6 bolt Momo and the 9 bolt Moto-Lita / Lecarra. I never did find the Nardi pattern, but Moss sells them and I think Tony can get a pretty good deal on them. Anyways, I drew it up and had a plastic one cut on a CNC mill. So Mike the way this works is you destroy a stock wheel to get a hub out of it? This does solve the issue for example of the different column sizes and hub spline sizes between pre'67, '68 & '69, and then later years steering shaft size.
 
Here is a thought from an no nothing. Could the adapter be made to fit most of the common wheels all in the same adapter?? ie one with a bunch of different holes.

Might could even sell something like that?

Jim, I'm not sure what you mean. The later 3 spoke wheels have 6 bolts that attach it to the hub, 2 for each spoke. If you unbolt the stock wheel, bolt on the adapter and bolt on the new wheel to the adapter nothing is destroyed.

Jack, my plan is to drill all the different patterns from the back side of the adapter but only 3/4 the way through. Once the wheel pattern is determined I can drill the ones I need the rest of the way and tap the holes.
 
Chris -- I assume this only works with the later steering wheel type, correct?

Here is my question:
What about the center?
Depending on the type of wheel, it might look a little odd to have that big hub poking out from behind the wheel.
 
Great work Chris! But it looks like no love for those of us slumming it in RB cars. Is that so?

The Wheel on Bugsy a '68 Sprite, came off of either a Triumph or a Morris Minor. A strange combo but does come with the lightning bolt horn push. It looks like a stock wheel but has 3 or 4 wires going to the rim not the 2 you see on most Spridget Wheels. I do not belive there is a hub on this wheel although I may be wrong on that one.
 
Now I am confused, is this for a bugeye or what?
 
Jack, this is for my '73 Midget. The early cars didn't have a separate hub. I don't know when exactly they went to the separate hub but I think it was around '70. As far as RB cars go I don't have a hub to compare it to but I thought they were very similar.
 
Yep thats kinda what I though as I read through it again.

I didn't know you had a 73 as well.
 
With the late RB steering wheels you could just cut the center out of the old wheel and drill holes where needed for your new one.

Somebody here has done this.
