I have a ‘74 Spit 1500 I purchased a couple weeks ago. Beautiful car and I’m hammering out a few small issues. One is that there is about 10 degrees of play in the steering. I can grip the steering shaft in the engine compartment and with very little effort turn the shaft back and forth. I can see and feel the pinion shaft rotate back and forth like it’s not fully engaged with the rack. Is this something that can be addressed with shims in the mechanism? Does anyone know of a good article or manual that addresses this? I can’t find anything in the Haynes manual or Owners Workshop manual that helps. I have a spare rack from an ‘72 parts car that does not exhibit this amount of play. Any advice would be much appreciated!
