steering rack oil

Ok, after I replace the gaiters, bellows, rubber thingies, how much oil do I put in? I've looked in my manual and can't find the information.
 
0.39 US pint. Manual says: "10 strokes of an oil gun with Castrol Hypoy." Gear oil. 80-W is what I've always used. Grease is too heavy and will allow air to be sealed into the boots causing them to balloon. Gear oil "valves" easier and allows trapped air to pass and equalize in the rack.

If overfilled, will it cause a problem?
 
May cause a hydraulic ballooning of the boots but I'd think it would take overfilling it a LOT to do that. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
 
Not much friction in there, juat a pint from empty is fine.
 
I ask because mine leaks from the cover/shims. I put all the shims that were there back in place but not sure If I overfilled it. I think I may have as I topped it off and did not put a measured amount in. There is always a lttle puddle on the driveway right under the fill opening.

Gesh, open both rubber boots and let it drain out, what remains is enough.
 
As Jack says, it don't take much. Alternately, you might try some Hylomar on the shims/cover to stem the drip. Just a film on each mating face and it should never leak again.

Yup, 85/90 in mine and it works great! Don't need a lot, just enough to keep the rack wet.
 
Instead of sealing it, maybe I'll let it work it's way out & find it own level. (I know that cheating)
