Steering Rack Lubricant ?

Maybe I'm a knuckle head but I have the hardest time finding anything under search. I know this has been discussed. I think the response is the same lubricant goes in the rack that goes in the pumpkin. What goes in the nipples on the rack, grease?

Some time ago I pumbed mine full of grease. Do I need to remove the two caps and fill with lube oil? Or do I somehow need to get the grease out I put in ?

Mark

Hi Mark,
The rack does take gear oil. It is squirted in through the grease nipple. I think 4 or 5 strokes per lube job. I have a oil gun I picked up at Mercury outboard dealer. I have heard of people putting oil in their grease guns. It's messy but it works.

I think it's supposed to be like 140wt hypoid gear oil.
I will need to do this job soon and need a way to get it in. I remember someone somewhere with a soloution?
Mike

According to the shop manual it is 90 WT HYPOID oil same as the rear end.
