Anyone have any ideas on what to look for? When turning the car either direction the wheels are over turning, ie they are travelling past the norm. This has caused the car to try to leave the road(not good). This also means that the driver had better be quite strong as the wheels won't return to center for the average person (they needed to back up to get them to return to center). This is a new one on me, so my question to you is: Has anyone else run into this problem? Is it a steering linkage problem? Are their supposed to be built in stops on the steering system? The linkage looks to be ok. So if anyone has any ideas I am certainly open to them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif
 
Has it been aligned recently? It sounds like the tires may be toed out. Take a tape measure and measure the distance between the front of the tires and compare that to the distance between the rear of the tires. The front should be the shorter of the two.
 
As Steward says you might be toed out. First I’d check to see if your tires wearing correctly and make sure the steering linkage is alright? Raise the front of the car and run the steering wheel from lock to lock. If it moves too freely or floats as you turn, you might possibility have a dry steering rack – are you rack boots intact or leaking? If not replace and refill the rack.

Another thing to look at is to see if you have excessive wear on the spindles & wheel bearings. It might be a good idea to inspect them and repack them anyway. But you might find some damaged components.

Besides that, you might also have any combination of other issues you should take a look at. I noticed a similar problem to yours with my 78B prior to rebuilding its suspension. Kind of hard to steer out of a tight turn and actually seemed to fight me. If that’s the case you might have severally worn bushing and/or loose hardware. Also while I was doing all of that – I got lucky & found that the bolts holding my cross member where lose and needed retightening. So make sure you go over everything thoroughly.

My problems disappeared after I rebuilt the front end with new bushings, replaced the rack boots and refilled the steering rack. Everything is smooth & positive now!
