Steering idler bushing direction

So there I was, happy that things were coming apart easily for once.... merrily singing /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif to my favorite songs on the radio. Then suddenly, after removing the old bushings from the steering idler, I looked more closely at the new bushings and realized that the bushings are not uni-directional! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif

Does the end of the bushing that has the oil channel all the way through face up? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif That would make the most sense to allow oil to flow everywhere.

No longer singing, /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

Hi Mark, I do not understand the question. If I remember correctly the bushings have a spiral groove that begins at the top.---Keoke-??

marka, there are two different bushes available the one on my bj7 is as keoke mentioned with the spiral groove, is your new one the same as your old one? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Hey Guys,

The new bushings are the same as the old. They have two grooves. One is horizontal around the center. The other is spiral and runs from one end to almost the other. It is not a complete path from end to end.

I think that the fully cut end faces up to allow gravity flow of the oil into the bushing, but since the spiral does not reach the other end completely, it will keep the oil in the bushing and not allow it to drain. Like a reservoir for each bushing.

I'm on the way to the machine shop now to have them pressed and reamed. I will check back here again later in case someone says different.

Mark
