Steering Idler Box

On a BJ8 should the steering idler box be painted black or left unpainted? Also any recommendations on what it should be packed with? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif
 
Hi Neils, if i could be such a bore as to quote to you what was printed in the restoration guide written by Gary Anderson and Roger Moment. "The idler box was unfinished aluminum. The top was black (painted or phosphate finish) and was fastened with zinc-plated bolts. The idler box was also secured to the chasis with a three-legged spacer, using zinc-plated bolts that threaded into the idler box body. Both steering box and idler box originally had grayish-green foam rubber dust seals, which were visible at the bottom. Current reproductions are made from a white foam material of a similar shape, which eventually turns gray-green with use." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
 
HI Neils, I prefer to "Pack" the steering Idler with Lucas 85/140 gear oil. Be sure that the end play is properly adjusted to Zero using the top end gaskets---Fwiw---Keoke
 
keokes right,when you reasemble,you will probably find you now either have too much end play or like mine did locked up due to not enough space provided by the"joint washers"to adjust the end play youll need to add or subtract these washers,lucas 85/140's the stuff.ya didnt think it was just gunna go back together did ya? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
