Steering Column Alignment Tool Question

I have installed the steering column in my 65 B that Gerry squared away for me, but I am not 100% positive that the two shafts are properly aligned. The manual shows a couple of pointer things that help to align the shafts.

I see now that Moss offers something similar for $25. Has anyone used something that could be made up at home (easily), or should I bite the bullet and buy the tool from Moss?

It's just for aligning the two shafts on-center for the U-joint, you can ~nearly~ eyeball it. With a bit of creative coat hanger modification you will be so close it makes the $25 dollar tool moot. Just keep in mind the center of the U-joint is what you're aiming for.

I put the column together leaving it loose and then hook up the "U" joint. Then I carefully tighten up the rest of the bolts. I've had no problems. As far as a tool for this is concerned, it reminds me of paying 400 bucks for a laser to bore site my rifles, OR, put them in a gun vise, pull the trigger and sight your scope in on the hole. Both work, just one's cheaper.

I got a suggestion to use a couple of spark plug boots and some Phillips bits. I like that idea, nice and cheap. Either that or the paranoia will get the best of me, and I will wind up getting the tool, just so I can say I have it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

A few years ago I installed a "new" rack and column by eyeballing them and never had any issues with binding or any other malady. Take it easy and slow. Send me the $25 that you will have saved. Good luck, bob
