My BN2 is #232091, which i believe makes it a "late model" car in regards to the Moss parts catalog. So, the first two pics are of the steering box and column end that's on my car (which is bent from a collision). The second two pics are of a newly acquired replacement.

Both steering boxes are the same, but then column ends are different. Is one from the early model with adjustable steering and the other from the later model non adjustable steering?

if so, why are both boxes the same? Shouldn't one be an early model box as well?

Well Timbn2, the first picture shows a non adjustable column while the second shows an adjustable one. Otherwise the boxes appear to be identical. Perhaps, it could be obtained in either configuration---Keoke-?

Your top pic shows a type 2 box. The second pic shows a non-adjustable column. The third pic shows a type 2 box. The fourth pic shows an adjustable column as Keoke says. The adjustable column would be the wrong type for your car.

To my knowledge, no BN2's came with the adjustable column & the dash slot would need to be widened to use an adjustable column.

Technically, to be correct, you should try to find a type 1 or 2 gear with non-adjustable column. I don't believe the parts are interchangeable between types.

The steering box came in three varieties. Check the Moss pictures & parts:

Type 1:
BN1, early BN2. Made by "Burman".
Triangular end plate on steering box (three bolts).
Spring loaded rocker shaft peg with ball bearings.
Could be adjustable or non-adjustable column.

Type 2:
Late BN2, early BN4, BN6. Made by "Cam Gears".
Square end plate on steering box (four bolts).
Solid rocker shaft & peg, no bearings.
Adjustable column (long splines) on BN4, non-adjustable column (short splines) on BN2, & BN6.

Type 3:
Late BN4/BN6, BN7/BT7, BJ7, & BJ8. Made by Cam Gears?
Square end plate on steering box (four bolts).
Roller type rocker shaft peg.
Both adjustable & non-adjustable columns depending on model.

The only positive way to identify the box would be to remove the top cover & compare it to the Moss pictures. It appears that your "replacement" may be a type 2 with adjustable column as used on the BN4.

As an item of interest, according to the Anderson-Moment book, the BN2 changed from the type 1 to the type 2 at C231109. However, my fairly late BN2, C231459, came with the earlier type 1, Burman gear & non-adjustable column. IMO, the earlier design gives less steering effort & a slightly quicker ratio than the type 2.

Well I do not know for sure which way it goes Dave, but if you look closely at the Moss picture for the BN1 and Early BN2 column. What is being shown is definitely an adjustable column. Take a look---Keoke-??

You can't really tell from the Moss catalog alone. Since they list all of these parts as NA, they don't have extreme need for accuracy. The pics DO provide a fair guide though.

According to the Anderson-Moment "records", the type 1 by "Burman" gear was used with an adjustable column on the BN1 up to Dec. 1953, C149930, at which time it was changed to non-adjustable with smaller column slot in the dash.

In Sep. 1954, at C219137, the type 1 Burman gear was changed slightly to provide a screw adjustment for the rocker shaft. It previously used shims on the top cover. Still non-adjustable column.

In Mar. 1956, at C231109, The type 1 steering was changed to the type 2, by "Cam Gears". Still non adjustable column on the BN2 & BN6. Adjustable on the BN4.

Later BN4 & BN6 & all later models used the type 3 gear & adjustable column.

A bit confusing. EH!

In any event, he really needs to find a non-adjustable column steering gear. Or, round up all of the other parts for the adjustable column & widen the dash slot. The "other" parts would include the inner tube & turn signal assembly.

Well, fecal matter! the pics at moss show the early model as having a different box with the long splined end. The pic that shows the box that i have (which is on BOTH columns) clearly shows the short spined end. And the last one has a completely different box...so i made the assumption (we all know where that leads) that if it had the same box it would have the non-adj. short splined end!

Hi Tim,
I suspect that your "new" box/column is the type 2, but set up for a BN4 with adjustable column. I don't think it would be practical to try to convert it to non-adjustable.

Any type 1 or type 2 with non-adjustable column should work. There should be "something" available somewhere. Columns & boxes could be & were factory mixed & matched but would require ALL of the proper parts matching. You could check with the usual suspects. Call BCS at Stockton, CA & see if they have any good used steering boxes or suggestions on where to find one. 209-948-8767.
