Here is what worked: First, put a jack stand under the frame. You will have to remove the side rods that attach to the pitman arm. This can be done with either a pickle fork (the tool, not your wife's)or a universal tie rod end remover. The pickle fork will damage the cover. The rod end remover probably won't. Jack the wheel under the coil spring so the side rod is at less of an angle to the pitman arm.
After the side rods are removed, lower the jack to let the spring expand and put a straight prybar between the chassis frame channel and the bumper mount to keep the pitman arm from rotating when you try to loosen the pitman nut. Resist the temptation to lever it against the steering box. A socket will fit but not with a ratchet. Remove the fabric dust seal. You have been soaking the pitman in PB Blaster for three days right? A large pitman arm puller as used in light trucks works. Remove the puller bolt. Slide the puller over the pitman. Put the bolt back in from under the control arm. Autozone has a free loaner front end service tool kit that has the puller and rod end remover. The large puller costs about $12.00. The puller will not fit on the pitman lugs but will fit in the space where the fabric dust seal sits. One arm of the puller will not go in fully but that is okay. You may try tapping a wedge like a large screw driver or pickle fork in the fabric space alternating sides a couple taps to open the space up but don't use too much force. Make sure the pitman arm puller accepts a socket extension as you will have to come up from the bottom. Another choice is an adjustable width universal pitman arm puller. I also saw an auto air conditioning puller that might work. Keep your work area clear because you will jump when the arm lets go with a loud snap!
