I am changing the gaskets in my 54 TR-2 long Door steering box. I have the bottom plate off and have disconnected the four wires coming from the Stauer tube. I need to remove the plate from the tube? I see threads on the end of the tube. How can i remove the plate so i can change the gaskets? Dick Vinal

If you removed the nut and olive, then the tube should be loose in the cover. If it isn’t, then the olive is likely still locked around the tube.

Hi Dick, often times the end plate is warped from being over tighten. The plate is made of mild steel and warps easily. The shims are fit to set the end float of the worm gear and are sealed between each shim with something like Indian head gasket shellac. There are usually 4+ shims of different thicknesses and sometimes on the end there is a very thin paper gasket. I would not take that apart while it is still in the car. Back in the day, people would remove the gear oil from the steering box and replace that with grease. If I remember correctly, Randall hated that idea. I think I remember you sent that unit to be rebuilt somewhere.

Little tricks on a refreshment of the old worm&peg. Press out the OE peg, press it back in at 90 deg to
its wear marks. Now its as good as new and better than AM. After you have done the bushing and seal,
accept the fact it will still leak. The cure is to pack the lower portion of the box with heavy grease.
It will take decades for the 90 wt to seep through it. I recommend NOT trying to install a new worm onto
the shaft yourself. Have this job done professionally if at all.
