K, the bro woke up his 72 B after a winters slumber.
Says the steering is pretty stiff.
Asked him if he has ever added fluid to it and he says he can't figure out where.
So what's the scoop on B steering racks
 
IIRC, you have to pour it into one of the boots with it off just a bit...
 
'72 should have a threaded plug (or possibly still has what appears to be an oversized grease fitting) over the junction where the steering shaft and rack join. Supposed to put gear oil in there. And ounces, not pints.

Be a good bro and get him a Bentley manual! :wink:

Put some grease in the king pins, it gets real thick in cold weather. Bring it down to NC and you won't have a problem, 95 today. My son just left your neck of the woods for Scotland and you finally get some days in the 80's.

Okay, I'll play straight man...

Section J, at the first paragraph, after the illustration is a description (page 222) for using an OIL gun to lube the rack. If there is no fitting he will need to remove the two 7/16" headed bolts keeping the cover, shims, spring and tensioner puck in place and pour a couple ounces into the rack.

The REAL issue may be the bushings in the column. One at the lower end can get dry and a bit of oil can make a big difference. Older ones are felt and NEED oil, his (IIRC) may be nylon. Either way, if the lower end of the shaft gets corroded it will stiffen the steering.

I'd still verify the tire pressure. They can loose a few pounds sitting over the winter at times and that will cause very heavy steering.

See, I tend to gain a few pounds when I sit over winter. Maybe I should switch to CABs. :wink:

Yea, I see the mistake, don't feel like correcting it though.
 
Took a gander at it Doc, couldn't see a spot for the nipple.
Did find a torn boot on the drivers side
 
The rack is then a "new" version, they seem to have decided too many Yanks thought it should get grease. Just remove the plate and pour some gear oil in there. AFTER you swap out the torn boot.
 
Thought the same thing and asked him that,
He bought the car from a good friend of his and he hasn't replace the rack nor is there a receipt for it he claims
 
Meant "new" as in 'after 1968'. Doubt his was replaced from original.
