Starting my BJ8 from stone cold requires no choke and it starts every time. However it backfires a few times, through the exhaust (I think, difficult to tell). It only does this after standing for a long time (overnight). I can start it, drive it out the garage, shut it down and on starting again a few minutes or even and hour or two later it's fine no backfiring until I park it in the garage and leave it overnight when it does it again. Is this normal? I've only had it for about a month and have no reference against which to compare.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

This is a new one to me, but unless global warming has raised ambient temperature in England to about 100degF Healeys should require some 'choke'--really, enrichment + idle speed increase--to start from 'stone cold.' Sounds like your carbs are tuned way rich, but it's just a SWAG. Here's a guess: Torn diaphragm in one or both of the carbs, that allow extra fuel into the intake manifold.
 
I'm with Bob, unless perhaps your car has been fitted with those automatic enrichment carbs. I'd drive it for a while, shut off the key while on the throttle and pull the plugs to check for color. If the car is tuned so rich as to allow for starting from cold without a choke they'll tell the tale.
