Starter...

I am rebuilding a 1500 MG Midget engine out of a Midget 76, built in 11-75, that has an actual 36,000+/- miles. I have had some weird problems but overcame them. A few months back My son ordered and paid for a brand new starter for his 79 MGB. The starter on the midget (although only 36K miles) is 30 years old. The MGB did not need a starter and is still in the sealed package. I've had it for almost 6 months and could get some of the cost back if I talked to my parts house. However, will the starter fit into the 1500 Midget engine? It looks similar and the Midget starter seems weak but working. I have seen starters advertised that are stronger and turn faster... whats your opinion and advice.

MGB starters and Midget starters are two totally different starters.
But anything from a TD, Spitfire, Minor, A30, A35. A40, Sprite, Midget, lots of Lotus' (Loti?) and a host of others will fit. No a Mini starter is different too, close but smaller mounting holes.
A slugish starter may just need to be cleaned up and re-lubed. This works for me most of the time.
In 33 years of driving Sprites, I have never bought a new or rebuilt starter. I keep making working starters out of semi dead or 2 starters.

Thanks... I didn't want to "open" the sealed package and try to fit it ... I might still get credit for it from my supplier. It is sealed in a plastic bag and new box... so he will give me credit towards some other part, I'm sure.
