Starter/ slow start problem

For some reason when I crank my 71TR6 for the first time in a few days it acts like the starter is not going to spin, it gradually starts going and it spinns up to what I call normal spinning if that makes sense, when the car is hot it starts fine, now it has a new hi torque starter, new battery, good battery voltage, I understand that my car does not have a starter relay. all the wires terminals have been cleaned, any suggestions

good tight ground strap from body to chassis? If so, take a voltmeter lead down to the signal terminal on the starter next time it needs to be started. You should have over 11 volts. If not a battery loss somewhere.

Possible the plate in side of the solenoid is getting worn, too. Nissan used to have available(can still order from the dealers) a solenoid repair kit for around 15.

I agree that ground from engine to chassis and from chassis to battery post is probably the culprit. But, if not, make sure that your timing is not too far advanced.

Does a 71 have the ground cable that runs to the engine as well as the body ? If not, might be a good conversion.

One way to look for bad connections (which can sometimes look good), is to immediately feel along both battery cables after waiting until the starter begins to spin. If you find a hot spot, there is a bad connection nearby. (I've burnt myself on a battery clamp that looked just fine.)

Not likely, but if the other suggestions don't pan out, you might try rolling the engine over once by putting the car in gear and pushing it. Don't bother trying to start it, but do have the key on. Just to see if there is some obscure reason the engine is hard to crank cold.

I installed brand new battery cables, both to starter and neg to the engine, I will check and see if it has a engine to chassie. this problem started a few months ago, I had the original starter which worked fine until the problem developed, i thought is was the starter so I purchased the new hi torque one, and also a new battery, so unless the battery is slowly discharging due to the radio I am at a loss

You should be able to see/feel the chassis ground as it is supposed to be fastened to one of the bellhousing bolts, if I remember right. I know it is on mine.

well it appeared the battery needed charging. I bought one of those battery maintainers. It lasted about 3 months and it doesnt charge any more, Dont waste your money one one of those, so I hooked up the real charger, charger the battery over night and the starter spins very fast now

One of the cheap ones from Horrible Freight ? I had a similar experience, except I went through 3 of them before deciding they were just junk. Might be OK if you only ever used them on a fully-charged battery, but they have no current limiting and the "wall wart" will burn up if the battery is down a little. In one case, I even replaced the wall wart with one rated for more current (off an old Hayes modem); and then the electronics box melted.
