Starter Options 1275 w/ Datsun 5 SP

Hello All:

After receiving all the great advice on the alternator options a few days ago, I thought I would throw this one at you as well. I would also like to replace the starter. It seems logical to do both jobs at the same time.

As noted, the car has a 1275 with a Rivergate/Datsun tranny, installed by PO. Searching the forum, it seems my options are:

Stock starter
Gear Reduction from one of the vendors
1989 Isuzu Trooper II 2.6l starter #17155

Question: It seems that the stock starter requires the Datsun bellhousing to be modified. It seems likely that the car has had this done, but I am hoping a few (poorly taken) photos will help you all to confirm it. If you can tell, does it look like I have a stock starter:

If it looks like that is the case, and that the Datsun bellhousing has therefore been modified, should I replace the starter with another stock item (or rebuild)? Would there be an issue if I changed over to one of the other starters, considering the alteration to the bellhousing?

Again, any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

Stock starter it is. Can be procured for about 49 dollars at auto store as a '64 Duster I beleive.

okay.

go to autozone and they should have it. it was about $65.00 for the isuzu starter. it'll bolt right in and you can use the stock relay switch/dash pull to start it.

and just bring the original starter to them because they aren't the smartest people, and you can get the core charge for it.

i know this because we did it to our sprite.

I would prefer to upgrade to a modern starter, but was concerned that the Datsun bellhousing had already been modified to accept the stock starter.

Would changing over to the Isuzu starter create an issue with the modified bellhousing?

if the stock starter bolted on, then the isuzu well bolt on, also check clearence on the fire wall,

I think not, however, the only upgrade is a geared starter and a street engine does not need one. The orginal starter is fine and is bullet proof. In 30 and years only had one go bad.

Lets see what some other folks have to say.

I'm with Jack, the stock one will do the job.

That said, however, I'm going with a gear reduction starter on the Spridget Project since the compression will be raised and I'm trying to trim a pound or two where I can...on the car...(I've given up on me)!

This one is from Rivergate...I believe Hap sells the same unit.

we really don't have a street engine seeing as we have a 1380cc semi-race prepped engine with 120hp.

and the higher torque of the isuzu starter allows you to wake up in the morning, and start right up without ANY problems.

My 1275 is only slightly modified, and compression remains stock. That said, I am keeping my options open, so I like to get input from you experts before I make final decisions:

The bellhousing issue worried me after I read this:

"The issue with the Datsun 5 speed conversion is that you have to cut a hole in the bell housing to make clearance for the Lucas starter. If you switch to the gear reduction starter you don't need to cut the Datsun tranny".

well, since that guy did it...

That hole is already cut out Bill, so you may as well use the stock starter.

That's my inclination as well. Just thought I'd get some input first.

Best source for a stocker? I'm in Dover, TN, population about 1400, so my options are limited...

no_cones_ever OUTSTANDING.

One source is

www.BritishStarters.com

the hole in the case is because the stock unit PULLS the bendex into the ring gear and the gear reduction unit PUSH OUT. The hole in the case is only cosmetic. There is nothing that needs to be sealed in the area. This according to Paul A. when he put the 5 speed into "the red thing". I chose the gear reduction unit rather than the hole, just because.

Auto Zone, Car Quest, O Riley or what ever you have.

1964 Duster. Think 49 bucks. When it comes it will be a LBC rebuilt starter.

A 1964 Duster? Plymouth? Hmm. OK; at that price I might as well go that route. I can always upgrade later if the engine spec requires it.

Thanks again all...
