Starter Issue

76MGB

I took out the starter the other day because I need a new solenoid. By the way this is a 1976 MGB. I opened up my MOSS catlog and saw they wanted 65.70 for a new solenoid. I wanted to know if a starter from the earlier Bs would work, the one with the seperate solenoid.
Thanks
Quentin

Nope - just have yours rebuilt

First check the solenoid contacts and see if cleaning them is all you need then while it is apart replace the brushes in the starter and clean the armature. This is a lot cheaper and you can possibly get a lot more years out of it.

Quentin Gournet, is that you? Gotta be ... Can't be another Quentin from Easton with a '76 B!

(Quentin is a brand-new member of our MG club.)

These guys are a great source of info. Me, I just hang out and learn . . . But welcome to the BCF!

Well, you could do it, but you don't want to. First, you'd have to pull the engine and change to an early backing plate. Then, change your long battery cable, and finally do the electrical stuff.
Although I'd like to sell you a new Moss solenoid, try NAPA first. You may get lucky.
