I am in the process of reassembling my 64b and have run into a snag. When I dissasembled the car (2.5 years ago)I removed the starter and put it on the shelf. Tonight I took it down to clean and check the condition. It is a Lucas starter ser#25022D. The problem is it does not look like any starter that I can find in any of my manuals and catalogues. Can anyone help me identify this?

From what I can find out digging on the internet, the Lucas starter part # 25022 was fitted to the MGTF, and the corresponding Moss part # is 140-400. It may be that a previous owner, being faced with a dead starter at one point, grabbed another off a shelf that had come off another, older MG that he used to own. Just a theory. But keep in mind, it could well be the original one to the car, it is a fairly early example don't forget.

Here is another interesting message on a tractor website:-
"I don't get why Lucas has such a bad rep. I was a British car dealer from 1948 through 1984 and I had no problems dealing with Lucas. There was a
great deal of common parts used in the various makes. For instance the 22258 dynamo (later 22700) was used in 90% of the 4 cyl. British cars; the same for the 25022 starter. As I recall they sold for $29.95 NEW, not rebuilt. Of
course you'll pay 5 times that now for a domestic rebuilt. One set of points fit almost all 4 cyl. British cars including Land-Rover (423l53) and cost about $3.95; the condensers lasted for years and seldom needed replacement.
Three regulators covered most makes - 37065, 37l82 & 37290 - they were about
$30.00 in memory serves me right. (How come I can remember all these part
nos. and can't remember my SSN??) All Lucas parts had the number on them
somewhere, so replacements could be ordered easily - just like your M1
rifle. The company was very nice to deal with; we seldom had problems with
warranty items - UNLIKE Chrysler Corp. Of course Rolls, Jag, Austin-Healey,
Rover cars had more expensive parts and there was not the interchangeability
that there was in the Hillmans, Sunbeams, Singers, MG's, Austins, &
Land-Rovers. I have no experience with Leyland tractors other then seeing
photos of them in Leyland News. (Leyland acquired Rover & Land-Rover in 1967). Don't mean to bore you but I had to share my experiences lest rumors and hearsay cloud the truth as I see it.
