Starter Drive Washer?

So something bad happened to my starter, causing the cotter pin at the end of the drive assembly to disintegrate and the end nut to strip out. (Actually, I'm guessing the nut was stripped first, which then spun and broke the pin.)

Anyway, it looks like I can order a new nut, but Moss shows a spacer washer (circled below, not available) that I also seem to be missing. I could believe it dropped into the bell housing behind the flywheel (I was fishing parts out with a magnet), but the parts diagram at AH Spares doesn't even show such a washer.

Does anyone know if that's an actual, needed piece? And, if so, any idea if it's a special shape (like could I use a flat washer)?

Thank you!
