Starter Cable/Knob

My starter sable broke and I bought a new one from Moss Motors. I have a wood dashboard and it's very difficult to tie the knob? Do you know if I need to remove the dashboard in order to install properly. Also, by the starter module in the engine, the cable is too long, do I need to pull it in the hole and use the screw to lock it in or should I cut the cable shorter?

Gabriel-
It would help if you could let us know which MG you are working on. The starter cables tend to come in a generic length and often have to be shortened or modified for a particular application.
