ok gentlemen i have a problem..so here it goes car just makes a click of the starter selnoid engaging but not turning battery is brand new fully charged thats the problem heres what i was doing when this happened
1--had not started car for a while
2--was still having hard time starting car
3--got car started saturday drove great after it finally started drove for 1 and a half hours
4--thought the car just needed to be run from sitting so long weel real problem was i didnot install a diode with the msd system i installed
5---the next day when i was trying to start the car the car was turning over fine it was trying to start but no sucess after about 3 minutes fo trying it made a click and no more turning over of the engine just the seliniod engaging but the starter was not spining had battery fully checked and recharged
6-- still no luck
7---taking starter off to check it
8--could it be the starter relay or diode resistor on this car

o yea the car is a 81 tr8 FI
i let you all know about the starter in a little bit
any ideas

Make sure you are hearing the starter solenoid clicking and not the starter relay clicking. I had a problem with starter relay contacts burning up on my '81 TR7/FI for awhile. I finally purchased some after market relays with 40amp contacts (like the ones for driving light circuits) and alleviated that problem. I also had the starter rebuilt because of a hot start problem. One of those two or both took care of all my start problems.

well took the starter to both o'reilly's and autozone to test both times bad--even hooked the power strait to the motor unit itself motor did not turn one bit just a pitifull cry of pain (from me) so i ordered a gear reduction starter which should be here by friday..i guess i don't get to add to my tatto any this month...

Sorry you had to replace it, good choice on the gear reduction starter though.
