Sprite Brake Lights

Last April I pulled the engine and rebuilt it, reinstalled and now brake lights do not work. Installed new ignition switch. Ran a jumper wire across brake switch. Pulled all 3 wires from tail light and put a test light to each one and the test light turns on. The wires at the brake switch are connected. The ignitions switch is off. When head lamp is switched on the tail light comes on. If I pull both black wires off, the tail light is still on. I am thinking there is a short in the tail light mounting system. When color wire is pulled off, no tail light is on. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Rod

Some clarification please. When all is hooked up correctly is it that the brake lights don't come on when you push the pedal? If you jumper the brake switch and have power on the correct wire at the rear then you've got a failed brake switch. Brake switches get notoriously funky when they are old.
