Spridget speaker placement

So tell me you all, where do you put speakers in these cars? The single speaker in the console is a joke. I have seen many speakers put into the rear panel that gets covered by the top when its down(I am leaning toward this). I have no intention of putting a radio in my car or tape deck or cd. I have a nice amp that I will mount in the trunk. The only thing I need is a jack to plug my mp3 player in (it holds 500 songs and has fm raidio as well) . Been thinking about using the radio consol as a speaker cabinet of its own, with a speaker on each side. Just thinking about it for now.

Currently, I have (2) 3.5" tweeters that I fit behind the console grill. It was really easy to do. I ran lines to the rear deck, but havn't figured out what I'll do there. The tweeters sound great, but obviously, no lows come out of them whatsoever.

I made up a new panel for the floor/deck whatever that thing is behind the seats. It fits on top of the frame rails around the wheel humps and I have two round speakers in that panel.
Carpet it to match the rest of the car and it looks like it belongs. I also have one of those hidden anteneas under that panel so no hole outside the car for the antenea.

Kim - When I bought my 76 Midget last summer it had a 1970's Radio Shack AM/FM/Cassette connected to the single speaker that the Midget comes with. Besides only using 1 speaker the old radio kept moving off the radio stations. I replaced the radio with one which still had knobs (it looks like to belongs in a 70s car) but it has digital tuning. I also installed a set of Pyramid 3808 200 watt 3-way speaker mini boxes on the carpet shelf behind each seat with the speakers pointing toward the rear of the car. The small speaker boxes fit well with no problem with seat travel or when the top is down. They sound great to me but I am not an audiophile. I don't need an amplifer or subwoofer the size of my 1500 cc engine to have a nice stereo. Here is the speaker set on Ebay (which is where I bought mine).

Hope this info helps.

I built a new rear panel and mounted a pair of 6 x 9's. Covered in expensive custom Black Carpet from Pep Boys($15.95 enough for 3 Spridgets) just like the rest of the car. The boot cover has straps on it to secure the boot cover in the center. I installed a couple of snaps on the new panel and made extensions of the straps on the boot( simple a male and female snap on opposite ends of a 2-3" piece of woven vinyl fabric strap from one of those swing stores). Boot cover and top now fits securely in place, easy to snap on, pulled up and rolled together, speakers are uncovered, and most importantly, speakers even if caught in the rain are protected under there.

Spritenut - how well does the antenna work, and where'd you purchase from? This sounds like a great idea for what I'd want to do in the back!

I mounted a power antenna at the rear corner of the boot. I had to drill a hole, but the antenna does not take up too much boot space, and it doesn't get in the way of car covers.

My sprite's PO put one speaker mounted on the drivers side under the dash against the outer wall of the car and the other was sitting in the glove compartment shelf /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif I put the loose one in the middle console for now, but they are very cheap and sound horrible, so I will be replacing them at some point not sure what to do as far as placement- maybe the same spot. Is it possible to put speakers in the doors?

My Midget's PO had a radio and two speakers on the rear panel before I stripped the interior. Which leads me to a question I've never seen answered: is there a history somewhere of the factory radios installed in Spridgets? Where can I find more information about its original radio, antenna, etc (if it had one)?

My '95 Miata has speakers in the doors and 2 speakers in each seat headrest. While there are rumblings of the factory miswiring of Miata headrest speakers, they are nice on the freeway with the top down.

Daniel,

I actually plan on putting the 3.5" tweeters in the door, is possible. I think on my '68 they should fit under the "sail panel" vent windows up front. I'll have to cut into the door, but as the window doesn't roll down there I think it'll work.

Orginal Spridgets, the early ones anyway, had a US radio installed by the dealer as an option. Mostly Moterola with or without FM and with or without push buttons.

I understand none were shiped with radios installed.

i put a high end panasonic mp3 player with a kicker component set! sounds AWESOME and loud enough to hear...
the tweeters and crossovers go in the grill area and the
midrange speakers are mounted in a new rear panel i made from MDF...has a "custom" made sub box attached to the back of it to save room......totally rocks....
i have pics but my computer is working intermittently
and im lucky to be here right now.....will post soon...z

Hey ... they weren't Cadillacs!

My sprite had a AM radio accompany it into my possesion (it was in the trunk, PO put in a Sony tapedeck). I promptly put it on ebay and got myself a JVC cd player. Sorry, purists, I'm a child of the 80's and 90's, AM don't cut it /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

But there is a wireless Ipod thingee that uses AM I beleive or is it FM?

This is what I did, I made a plate to hold new alpine speakers behind the original grill and insulated it to so that it wouldn't vibrate. I didn't have to molest the car and it has a stock look.

I think you would have to turn your speakers up pretty loud to hear them with the top down if they are behind you, having them right next to and in front of you is great.

The push button I put on the left of the radio lets me turn it on to play music without having the key on, I used a set of diodes so that the ignition will still also turn it on. The toggle switch on the console I hooked up to let my electric fan run if the ignition is off (when cooled down the temp control will shut the fan off even if this switch is on).

You only can see the speakers behind the grill like in this picture if you take a picture with the flash on.

tullamore, that's exactly what I did. Works great!

Jack, all of the modulators that I know of are for FM.
