Spridget 1275 SU Fuel Pumps

Can you tell I'm starting to get into my project with all the questions?! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thankyousign.gif

I took my SU Fuel pump out of my Bugeye today. It had two banjo fittings and looked VERY similar to the SU Fuel pump I have in my B. I tried to get it to work and.... nada. I even tried the "hammer" trick.

Looking at the SU fuel pumps in the Moss Spridget catalog, it looks like they don't have banjo fittings at all, but rather regular crimp style fuel hoses! (?)

I'm just trying to figure out what's "right" for my 1275.

How about Moss #377-175 or 377-185 (what's the difference here?)

John, the 175 pump is an SU, the 185 is an aftermarket copy. I think I'd stick with the SU. You may want to find out if the pumps are polarity sensitve, though.

Isn't it weird that the aftermarket pump is more expensive than the SU?! Good point about the poliarity. Seems like I've read it's reversable by re-wiring the diode, but I dunno.

John, evidently the freight is higher from China than it is from England, eh?
I think you're correct about reversing the diode, but at one time, you could buy the pumps either + or - ground. I've still got a new SU positve ground pump on the shelf, bought about 15 years ago.

Is the aftermarket unit "solid state"?

Good point. I dunno. I'll call Moss tomorrow. I'm trying to put together a big Moss order before the price increase expected by the end of the week.

But just to confirm. Spridget SU 1275 pumps don't have banjo fittings correct? If they do, I'll need to buy new banjo hoses.

Here's another dumb question and I don't want to start another thread, but do HS2 heatshilds have the abestos type strips on the back? The one currently in my car doesn't.

John, no, the Spridget pumps didn't have banjo fittings, and there is nothing on the back of the carb heatshield.

Thanks Jeff!

Just as a follow up, I called Moss and they said 377-175 was correct for my application. Also, with that pump I can change it from pos to neg earth depending on my set up.

Agree if you go elec fuel pump it needs to installed properly. Hehe, bugeye has a mechanical fuel pump. Sorry.

Before you replace the old pump have you tried to clean/sand it's contact points and adjust the toggle inside? It's not that hard and it's a lot cheaper than a new pump. Most Haynes manuals (and of course the SU manual) discuss the procedure.
