I finally decided to buy a Sports Coil to replace the stock Lucas Coil (dated 1971) on my TR3. I figured it a) looked better b)was lighter c)might allow me to widen the spark plug gap to get a smidgen better performance.
Like normal, a two bolt, three wire operation took 30 minutes, instead of the predicted three minutes. My old one turned out to be a screw-top (new is push on) and one wire had a wrong connector. I MacGyvered it all together...
Interestingly enough, it took care of my starter problem! When cold, my starter would bog horribly, and it would take several minutes to start. Even after the weekend of being idle, I just went out there, and it started on the second push of the starter, only because my finger slipped the first time!
My lead and the coil connector that were in there were slightly corroded. My guess is that I wasn't getting full spark. I can't wait to get out there tomorrow in the predicted 72 degree weather and drive it. Maybe I'll hook up my performance meter and see if I can beat my 10.5-second 0-60 time! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
$15 for a used sports coil on Ebay sure beats $200 for a new starter! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
