Spoked wheel: To buy or not to buy

Replacing a spoke is not really a big deal, but the problem with buying used wires is that sometimes they are way out of true (I learned this from experience).

Also, used rims sometimes have pretty significant rust inside the the rim. If the spoke heads are frozen, truing the wheel can be a real pain.

If you are close to the seller, you could have a look at them, and see how they look up close.

I am in the market for new wires/alloys myself. I just need to make up my mind which way to go.

The biggest issue would be the condition of the splines. Also, I would assume that the tires are too old to be safe, regardless of how much tread they have on them.

And those bladders appear to be "snow" tires anyhoo... not much good in Florida.

Spokes are not that hard to replace. It's the condition of the splines that is very important. I have about a dozen of those wheels in the shed and probably three or four have decent splines, but the rims and some spokes are bad, the rest are just waiting for the junk man. Be very careful buying used wires unless you or a knowledgeable friend inspects them. You know the old saying about buying a pig in a poke! JMHO. PJ

So long as they don't break due to rust!

I have a few spokes and nipples NOS, Dunloop, if anyone's interested...
