Spitfire Spitfire Transmission Options

I have an OD tranny. And it makes me nervous every time I flip that switch (it works perfectly and has not failed, so I dont know why I feel that way, but I do lol!). I was looking at the idea of swapping this transmission out for something a bit more modern with a 5th gear. I know about the popular ford swap, but I was more curious about if there are any other options. I like Ford transmissions about as much as I like... I'll skip the puns, I just don't like them, and having a Ford tranny over my stock one would likely make me just as nervous, but in every gear.

I know the TR6's have lots of options, including one of the best transmissions every built, which comes from the Toyota Supra.

So is there anything like that for the Spits that isn't made by Ford?

Hi Pete - is there anything actually wrong with your O/D? If not I'm not sure the time and effort - of which there will be a bunch - will justify swapping it out.

Nope, nothing wrong with it at all, its just that really fast kick in and out of OD is what makes me nervous. I know its supposed to do that, but I still don't like it. I guess its the same reason why I don't care for automatic transmissions as well.

I plan on having this Spit a LONG time, so I will totally put in the time and money for more reliability.

If you go the transmission swap route and decide to sell your o/d transmission, let me know.

Sure thing. But I would likely just give it to you, as I don't exactly feel right taking any money from anyone on this forum. All of you have helped me tremendously and that priceless in my book.

If your ever gonna get rid of your car,I'm first in line.

That sounds more than fair, I just hope I can help you out someday. Just read your engine rebuild post. I'll ask some of the guys in my club what they'd get. Just for kicks, I've been toying witht he idea of fabrication a dual 150 Stromberg setup just to see how it goes...

That idea kinda makes me sick in the stomach. ZS carbs are just not an option to me at all. Twin Weber DCOE, or better yet Twin SU's are definitely the way to go... unless your looking at motorcycle carbs like I just was.

Strombergs without smog control and proper exhaust have huge power potential. Look what Group 44 did with a single Stromberg on the Spitfire. I have twin SUs, and prefer to not deal with Webers. They just aren't as good as they were in the past. It seems like quality has steadily gone down on Webers in the last 10 years to me. However, I have a friend who is a wizard with them.
