Spitfire Spitfire trans serial number question

I have been attempting to repair the transmission in my spitfire and noticed something funny. I have a 68 spitfire MK 3. It is supposed to have a 3 rail trans with 3 syncros. This one appears to have 4 syncros. according to my sources the serial should start with an FD prefix. This one has an FK. I double checked that to be sure. None of my materails say anything about an FK prefix. Any idea what this may have came from?? TIA

I believe the gear box is the same for all Spitfires. Is it possible that some one changed the internal pieces? I took apart a three rail tranmission a few years ago and it appeared that replacing the gear cluster or addng a synchro wheel would do the job. T.T.

T.T.
For the most part you are correct. All of the earlier triumphs, I beleve through 1974, were 3 rail trannies with D type O/D's, if OD equiped. However, at some point in the production they switched over to a full syncro gearbox. I am unsure of the year they did this. I believe it was in 71-72 or someplace close. I know that the gearbox in this car is not the original box because the prefix is definately wrong for the year. I am unsure if the FK prefix was one from another year of vehicle or if it is from perhaps a Hereld or Doloimite or maybe a GT6. It could also be one of the Standpart aftermarket spares. It would help me a great deal to know thses things so I can order parts and helps me understand the history of my little gem.

Hi Darwin.
I have a FK coming out of Spitfire Mk4 1300 and 1500 USA modles.
Have fun!
I will get thoes parts out to you ASAP, I just need to remember to get the box out of the Sports 6 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I had the same problem on my 64 Spitfire. As I recall I also had a FK tranny installed. It came from a GT6. I used my Rimmer Brothers catalog to help identify my set up.

Good luck

Your "FK" serial gearbox is indeed an all-synchro Spitfire three-rail gearbox. The only significant differences between that and the "FD" Mk3 gearbox are the synchro first with a slightly "taller" ratio, and a larger output flange, requiring the correspondingly larger flange on the driveshaft (which I'll guess is already there; u-joints are the same regardless).
