Spitfire Spitfire O/D Transmission

Country flag
Offline
I'm thinking of upgrading to a 5-speed and have found that the Spitfire single-rail overdrive transmission (1974 onwards, I think, with type J O/D) may be a suitable alternative.

I'm looking at rebuilding the engine to yield around 110 HP, 100 lb/ft torque.

Can the transmission/overdrive cope with this power?

Any thoughts on its suitability, otherwise?

Thanks.

James

In short, yes. A good J-type can easily handle 100 HP, unless, of course, you're racing or rudely thrashing the car on a regular basis (which we know you wouldn't do, James :yesnod:). Having said that, J-types were raced regularly and seemed to have held up under some very tough condtions. It's a good unit.

A wise choice, IMHO, to use the J-type instead of the 5 speed gearbox. Make sure it's in good condtion, and enjoy!
