Spitfire Spitfire MK I Help

Dear all,

I am back again asking for help, and thanks in advance for any replies. I am looking for a NOS Abarth exhaust for my 1964 Spit, but any free flow exhaust would work, preferably header and all the way back. Does anybody have a resource? I tried VBL, TRF, Rimmer, Moss, etc.

Thanks for your consideration.

Dan

I believe there has been an Abarth (maybe Ansa) listed on ebay for many months. Way overpriced in my book as it has a rust spot on it. It did not include a manifold/header.

TRF has the Falcon system in stainless, but it doesn't include the header. Rimmer has the full set up on their website. They often have specials, but shipping is going to hurt.

I think Ted Schumacher has a 4-2-1 header, but don't know about the rest of the system.

Yeah, I saw those. The eBay system must have sold as I didn't see it. Thanks for the reply. I might go stainless.

Thanks for the Stebro link. They only have the tips the way it looks, but with a stainless system, that looks like a good solution.

That's nuts. It would have to go on a trailer queen at that price.

Found it in the completed auctions. Never sols. It was $350.

Thanks for that! I'll send a note and see about it.

On second thought, I saw the blistering. $350 is a bit too steep given that it isn't in good condition. However, I did note that he said it was designed for an MK II but it would fit an MK I. Is that true? If so, Monza makes one for the MK II that I could use. I wonder if the header would also fit?

The primary difference between the original Spitfire 4 and Mk2 exhaust systems was that the Mk2 had a "factory" header, while the Spitfire 4 had a cast-iron manifold and a headpipe. From the center section back, the systems were pretty much the same.

I don't know anything about Monza systems (except that I've never been very fond of them!), but I'm sure that, at worst, a good muffler shop could easily adapt/connect a Monza to whatever you have.

Thanks Andrew, for the advice. Yeah, there aren't a lot of options, so that gives me more options. I had read that the "factory" header was problematic, so Ill probably just keep the original. It isn't leaking.... at least not until I start pounding away at the rest of the sustem.

I remember fitting an free-flow exhaust of some sort to my Cortina when i was a kid. The local parts store had all kinds of fittings to make it work, and I used a couple of them and clamps to make it work. It kept coming apart until I wrapped everything in some kind of wrap - I don't remember - probably asbestos. Cough. It didn't look very pretty, but it sounded nice.

Why don't you care for Monza? Just curious.

Monzas I've encountered over the years tended to be a: rather loud and b: not all that long-lasting. Also, the one I had on a Spitfire 1500 seemed to do only one thing really well, which was to soot up the back panel of the car and allow fumes to come right back into the cockpit when the top was down. Other than that, no problems.

Come to think of it, I had these issues with the TR6 (Monza exhaust). It was way too loud, and I could smell exhaust. I didn't connect the exhaust smell to the tail pipe. Hmm.

saw a couple of Spits with the Monza exhaust that had the tips out even with the bumper. The owners said it helped with the noise level. This may also help with the soot issue...
