Spitfire Spitfire Convertible Top Installation?

I posted a thread on the NASS Yahoo group about this but haven't got an answer yet regarding a couple of issues so I'm parallel posting a couple of questions here.

A previous owner of my project car did a screwy installation of the top. I didn't realize until recently that there is supposed to be a metal bar in the bottom, back part of the top which bolts to the car body. (Not there on my car... had to order one). When I ordered parts, I selected items from exploded assembly drawings. Included were some rubber washers that are associated with the male snaps that attach to the metal bar. Do these rubber washers go between the bar and the top or between the top and the snaps?

I've read Paul Tegler's write up on installing a top and am prepared to do this task in stages to allow the vinyl to stretch and set. No instructions came with my top so I'd appreciate any general pointers from those of you who have done this yourself. For example there are some small side tabs at the front that look like they are supposed to rivet to the front of the frame. There are some remnants of these features on my existing top but I don't know how tight these are supposed to be and small things like that. All advice is welcome.

Thanks,
