Spitfire Spitfire Axle Assemblies - long vs. short ?

When I finally got our project '72 Spitfire around the block I learned very quickly that the band-aid repair I tried on the worn out RR axle assembly didn't work. It appears I need to replace the axle and drive flange along with replacing the bearing.

Am I correct that the axle assemblies are all the same up until 1972 (short) after which the axles are longer? If I am correct and you have a short axle assembly or a lead on one, would you send me a PM about it please?

Thanks,

Doug, the change was with the 1973 models; that happens to coincide in the US with the introduction of the "1500" engine. But yes, all axle assemblies from 1972 BACK are the same, except for the u-joint flange (larger on 1971 and 1972). Any Herald assembly would also work (although they'd all have the smaller flange on the u-joint as well).

Thanks Andy. When Jamie and I took the car around the block you could hear a bearing noise on the RR. This was a noise that had not been there prior to my addressing the bodge left by a PO. Replacement seems only logical since my attempt at a repair did not work.

Thanks also to those that sent me PMs. I'll respond to them shortly.
