Spitfire Spit Rebuild

I am swapping the engines in my Spits. I've pulled the engine from my 200$ Spit (Whitey) and it is at the machine shop. I should hear today about piston and bearing sizes. I'm getting it hot tanked, line bored, deck leveled, cylinders bored, crank turned, cam reground, valve job, blah, blah...

I'm taking the Weber off and going to twin SU's and adding a header and 9:1 pistons, I'm also going back to the stock valve cover.

I'm glad there was something good from the $200 spitty. I didn't see your name at the ESCCA Icebreaker event?

That's where I was headed when my engine started making Very Scary Noises. I got about 10 miles from Eugene and had to shut it down. Thank God for cell phones and AAA Plus.

Our all adult driven 77 was down for the count last year. Bent pushrod, cam destroyed, crank damage. Common 40,000 mile wear according to the local expert..

We went to our local MG garage for a rebuild. The owner used to race 1500 Spitfires and had built many. He advised that the lower part of the engine was fragile and a somewhat stock rebuild was advised.

We decked the heads a bit, quality multi axis valve job. Reworked the crank. New stock cam. Rebuilt 11/2” dual SU’s. 74 exhaust. Flat pistons. Aluminum flywheel.

What a pleasant difference. Now we can use the throttle in corners. The max usable rpm’s was extended 500. We were very happy and did not break the bank.

I noticed that the PDX craigs list has a PRI built spitty for sale. every option PRI sells I think for the spit.

They make really nice stuff. I'll bet it's hot. At 18000$ it better be. There was a black one at the ABFM last year with their rollbar, side exhaust and 4 Mikuni carbs that was very, very nice.
