Spitfire Spit 1500 bumpers

hey all,
I have a 75 spit 1500.
the bumpers will need to be rechromed (the center section of the rear may need replacing.

i have two questions

has anyone seen a spit with the bumpers "blacked out"??? (painted either gloss or flat black) mine is a red car with gloss black rims. opinions on how it would look? it would have to be better than the pitted rusty units that are on there now right?

second question....is it possible to put the older style bumpers (the ones without the god awful black rubber bricks)on a later model?

thanks

I have seen the blacked out bumpers and don't care for them. If you want to see what it looks like on your car and your bumpers need work anyway, why not paint them with black latex paint. It will be easy to get off and then go with the rechrome or permenent paint.

You already have the old style rear bumpers. They are just hidden under all the safety crap. You can remove the bricks and hardware and put chrome headed bumper bolts in the six holes. The result is a nice clean look.

As for the front, there are some european style overriders available that will greatly reduce the amount of ugly on the front bumpers.

thanks for the reply.

i am going for CHEAP visual improvements...i think my wife will string me up if i spend another dime on this thing for awhile....lol..i was thinking that painting would improve the looks untill i can afford rechrome or replace...

thanks for the heads up on the rear. the worst part of the read is that center cover...although i am not sure what it looks like underneath...the ends may be servicable for now.

as for the front...any suggestions were i should start looking for the overriders? are they just a cap that covers the bricks?

thanks again for the reply.

You will probably be pleasently surprised when you take off the center section. It serves to protect the bumper underneath.

I have seen the overriders for sale on E Bay. They are not cheap. If I remember correctly they are from England so you will have to pay shipping also. They are the European style which were much smaller and still made of hard rubber.

I keep looking at mine and trying to come up with an alternative. If I do I will let you know.

Yes, you can fit older bumpers. On the rear, it's a straight up bolt on swap. Up front, you have to do some trimming of the steel pad on the end of the frame box.
