Why is a couple of healey engine specialist telling me to not ever use a spin on oil filter adopter?

So you can get a good oil bath once each season, maybe?
 
Personally, I have never heard anything bad about the spin-on adaptors. I’d be curious what their reasoning was. Maybe they used Fram filters?
 
Not to turn the coin too much, but other than the mess, is there a good reason to switch, like better filter technology, and consequent better engine protection? I decided to stay with the cannister filter, knowing about the mess, just out of, I guess, a desire to retain originality where reasonably possible.
 
There are modern material filters for the canister. I use the canister, I like the look.
 
Well Cutlass, you can have your cake and eat it too. Just get an extra canister assy off E-bay. build it up on the bench. Next oil change head to a Jiff lube type place. While he is draining the oil remove the dirty unit install the clean one and when the tech comes up to put *your oil* in give him the dirty one to clean up!. Go with a canister...looks better, improves your eye/hand coordination and memory skills, and besides it's what modern Euro cars use these days...like my 2004 Mini.
 
The early versions of the spin on filter that bolted to the existing filter head were sometimes defective such that the oil did not enter the filter element, it just went back to the block. I had one on my engine for 40000 miles! The later adapters that directly bolt to the side of the block are ok.
 
One advantage of the canister type filter is the ability to easily examine the paper filter material to see what the filter caught. Many racers like this feature. It provides an indication of the engines health.

Personally, I perfer the spin on unit. I am astonished that my 2006 MINI has a cartridge type filter!
 
The reason why your 2006 MINI has a cartridge type filter is because Europe has more stringent laws concerning waste disposal. Spin-on filters are less earth-friendly. I believe Germany is especially strict. Once our land-fills finally fill up, America too will adopt more strict ecological policies...it's already happening, as with tire disposal.
 
My wife's 2000 Volvo has a canister type filter. I was having her take it to the dealer for oil changes up until this year. Well needless to say I had to buy a special tool for the eeeeeek.....Volvo.

At least my 2000 Ranger PU and Healey use the same spin on filter K&N HP-2009 I think. I should start buying in bulk.
