Speedometer

Oh gosh, look in the WIKI and or do a search on that subject. Lots of activity over the years.

I have no first hand experience with the new speedometers but I have helped people with the new tachs. You can review some of the installation and programming information about the speedos in the link below.
https://www.caigauge.com/page8.html

Electronic speedos use pulse generators to feed signals to the gauge. Most of these gauges are also designed for negative ground. If your BE is still positive earth and you want a modern gauge you will need to convert to negative ground.

The pulse generators that fit directly on the gearbox are not common. Most are designed for GM and Ford applications and thread onto their gearboxes.

I would be really interested in this also. Since installing the 5 speed, my speedo stopped working. It's not anything in the cabling or drive adapter on the tranny, it has to be internal to the tranny and I really don't care to pull the engine/tranny to fix it (right now). This looks like a nice alternative. Right now, I use my GPS to gauge my speed. If anyone knows of a specific model number gauge to use, I would be interested.

Send a PM to "Coastalman". Charlie installed a large VDO programmable speedo in his BE project. If you don't like VDO, there are several AutoMeter units available. The Smiths units listed above are also an option. What you are after is a 100mm diameter (4"). There is nothing spectacular or unique to differentiate one as better than another. They can all work with the same types of signals and they are all programmable. However, you will find a large spread in the prices.

The issue remains the sending unit, not the gauge. In the case of your 5-speed you will have to source a different sending unit than what will work on a typical LBC gearbox.

before you put it to the tranny, have you tried turning the cable end at the trannie connect and observe if the speedo is crankin. variable speed drill will do it. Tranny speedo gears are quite stout..

Find it hard to believe it is in the tranny

My MK III Midget has a Datsun 5 speed conversion and the speedo is off about 22% (lower than actual speed). I've actually gotten used to it and it doesn't bug me at all anymore.

I calibrated the speedo with GPS to be sure of the correct error percentage. Don't usually carry the GPS in the Midget, so I printed a tiny slip of paper with the correct speeds at 5 MPH increments that I carry in the console, just to remind me when I get a bit carried away with "spirited" driving.

I hear Rivergate sells a correct speedo cable that may correct this, may be worth checking out.

FWIW.

And for < $50 including all of the parts, pieces, wiring, nuts and bolts you can adapt a Sigma Bicycle Speedo to your Spridget.Less if you're lijke me and have a lot of junk in your shop. The Sigma units read to 180 mph. Fab a mount out of a piece of scrap sheet metal that bolts to windshield center mount bottom bracket and the Speedo will be right at eye sight level on top of the dash. Easy to see without taking your eyes off of the road. Batteries last about 2 years and then simple $3.00 battery replacement and you are good for another 2 years. Can be calibrated exactly based on wheel diameter and is an interesting engineering project. Button Magnet JB Welded to the outside of the rear drum is your trigger. Reed switch can be glued to a 5-6" long piece of scrap aluminum or steel 1" wide that attaches to on of the spring/axle bolts. A little wire fed through the tranny tunnel and up under the dash and "Bob's your uncle!"

Got pics if you are interested in my setup.

Deluxe Speedometer in Denver will do it right. Put the right connects together and with a simple 5 mi test get mph to close to call.. Maybe 100-150 bucks

Thanks J-P. One day I'll eventually learn how to post a picture directly.

Doug,

Looks like you set up some sort of night light? Got the new Sigma Speedo today to replace my 1200 that died on me after 6 -7 years. A lot larger and lot bigger display. Will fit right on my old mount so nothing to modify. $29.00 with shipping from Amazon.

Excellent price Jim. I replaced a BC800 model with the 1600L only because the 1600L has an EEPROM in it to store the wheel scale factor and odometer readings when the battery dies. The 1600L fits directly on the same mount as the 800. The 800 is now working on one of our bicycles. Sigma makes good products.

Yes that is a green LED mounted on a bent coat hanger covered with heat shrink tubing and wired into my dash lighting. It provides just enough illumination for me to read the Sigma at night without being a distraction.

Thanks for all the info on the bicycle speedos. My car is in no way concourse material but I don’t think the bicycle speedo would look very good hanging of the dash. I was hoping some one had first hand knowledge on the Smith electronic speedo. I am still trying to keep close to the Bugeye look.

I guess I could duct tape the Droid with the speedo app to the dash and use it.

all kidding aside the're instructions (can't remember where) to take the face off of a bugeye tach and replace the later model electronic tach's face with it. Now that being said, the 7 thou tach and the 6 thou tach face will make for abit of a challenge...but who really reads a tach haha

Me, I need a tac.
