TR2/3/3A Speedometer Reset

I bought a used, but working speedometer for my TR-2. It has alot more miles then my car. Is there a easy way to set the mileage back?
 
I can't imagine that resetting the odometer on a replacement speedometer to reflect the previous speedometer's mileage would be illegal. Here in CA, when you sell a car less than 10 years old, you have to sign a statement that the mileage is correct, or a statement that it is not. Older than that, no one cares.

In any case, "mileage" is a meaningless concept on a car this old. "Mileage" of which part, exactly? MY 52 MGTD had at least seven documented engine replacements or rebuilds, at least one transmission rebuild, and countless replacements of other parts. Most cars have had one or two speedometer replacements or has been run with a broken speedo cable, and there is no record of how many times the most recent odometer has turned over.
 
What is illegal, at least at the Federal level is "Odometer Fraud", which basically means lying about the mileage on the car.

Here's part of the Federal statute:

"If the transferor knows that the odometer reading does not reflect a valid mileage display or differs from the mileage and that the difference is greater than that caused by odometer calibration error, they shall include a statement that the odometer reading does not reflect the actual mileage, and should not be relied upon. This statement shall also include a warning notice to alert the transferee that a discrepancy exists between the odometer reading and the actual mileage." [49 CFR 580.5(e)(3)]

So it appears that at least as far as the Feds are concerned, as long as you acknowledge that the mileage is incorrect, you are OK.

Each State would use this as a basis, and possibly add their own further restrictions.

In my State, there is an "Odometer Disclosure Statement" that asks for the odometer reading and then includes these two check boxes:

â–ˇ The mileage stated is in excess of mechanical limits

â–ˇ Reading is NOT actual mileage

I don't see anything that would differentiate between installing a new or used speedometer or rolling back the original one, as long as there is no misrepresentation.

TR-2 certainly may be different, but I was able to reset the odometer on both my 74 TR6 and my 69 GT6 back to zero. It was stressful, though.

Well now. This explains a whole lot of why you have never understood what I have sent to you over the years!! I put a LOT of work into those old restoration posts, and Photobucket still makes me pay every spring to keep the photos current. Glad you finally understand how to access them. Once you have read the post, we will be happy to answer any questions you still have.

I have all of your messages , especially the TR-2 Recipe. When I was restoring Paddy I referred to it daily.

My (admittedly vague) recollection is that you can gently pry up a little springy arm that will then allow the numbered wheels to be manipulated. Their interaction may prevent you from easily setting a specific number but sounds like you'd be content to get the replacement unit in the ballpark.
