The cable from the speedometer to the service indicator 75 and 76 year feature froze up and now with the cable replaced the speedometer is now inop when in the car but tests fine on the drill. I'm hearing a light clicking sound when backing up. I'm thinking a gear grenaded somewhere between the indicator and the transmission when the cable froze. Any ideas on where to look and how bad it's going to be to fix?

I'm getting to good with the speedometer as I can now have it in and out in 15 minutes and with only a small amount of skin loss.
 
Just tested the indicator and it's still good but the lower cable just spins so I'm now pretty sure its the gears in the transmission. How bad is that going to be.
 
Replacing the gear in the transmission is pretty easy. Just remove the angle drive (if you have one) and then take out the two bolts holding the retainer in place, pull out the old drive gear, and slide the new one in. Not too bad a job at all.

Unless the gear wheel itself has separated from the rest of the mechanism...in that case, when you pull it, the little gear falls down in the transmission.
 
K - I just packed one up that's going out Monday for somebody else.

Car is fixed and I can now tell when I am speeding. Rebuilit speedometer from palo alto speedometer is smooth as silk. Turns out the angle drive blew up and I'm not sure of that event caused the housing for the speedo gear to crack or it cracked on it own.

Not a job I want to do again any time soon.
